The unique amber weighing more than 5,300 g was mined in December, 2021 at the deposit Volodymerets-Skhidnyi of the LLC “Sun-Craft Centre” (AmbertradeTM).
This is a unique discovery not only for the whole of Ukraine, but also for the whole world. After all, such specimens are very rare, in the history of independent Ukraine this is the first discovery of amber of this weight.
According to the State Gemological Center of Ukraine, amber samples weighing more than 1,000 g are rare natural formations. The largest sample of amber weighing 9,750 g is in the Museum of Naturkunde in Berlin. Specimens weighing more than 5 kg are extremely rare according to official data there are only a few stones in museums and private collections around the world. In Ukraine, the largest samples of amber stored in museum collections are a specimen weighing 1,930 g in the museum of the State Enterprise “Amber of Ukraine” and a specimen weighing 1,040 g in the museum of precious and decorative stones of the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine.
The amber sample was studied by experts of the State Gemological Center of Ukraine, who confirmed its uniqueness. According to research, this sample is amber – succinite.
Succinite is a natural fossil resin formed in the Eocene period (42-38 million years ago) on the European continent, it contains from 3 to 8% of succinic acid (C4H6O4) and has a characteristic infrared spectrum. Distribution region – Baltic-Dnieper amber sub-province, which covers almost all of Poland, the Kaliningrad region of Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, south and southwest Belarus and most of the Right Bank Ukraine.
